First-Year Students NWU 2026 Registration Guide

NWU 2026 registration is only for students who received and accepted a final offer from North-West University.

Registration for first-year students opens on 19 January 2026 and closes on 7 February 2026.
Spaces are limited and depend on qualification capacity.

Step 1: Get Your Student Portal Login Details (MySIS)

NWU will send your MySIS login details by email from no-reply@nwu.ac.za.

You will receive the email on:

  • Your personal email used when applying (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.)

  • Your MyNWU Outlook email

You need these details to log in to the Student Portal, where registration and payments are done.

Activate Your MyNWU Email

  • Set up your MyNWU email as soon as possible

  • NWU will use this email for all official communication

  • You can access it via Outlook or webmail

When logging in online:

  • Choose Work/School

  • Select Active Directory


Step 2: Log In to the Student Portal

  • Open the Student Portal

  • Do not open multiple tabs or windows

  • Always sign out before logging in again

Click Student Portal Homepage and log in using your MySIS details.

What You Can Do on the Student Portal

  • Register for courses

  • Pay fees

  • Upload documents

  • View class resources and calendars

  • Track your student progress


Step 3: Pay the Minimum Registration Fees

You must pay the minimum fees before you can register.

How to Pay

Option 1: Student Portal

  • Log in using MySIS

  • Select Online Payment

Option 2: Payment Portal

  • Choose Student

  • Select Student Account

  • Choose Student and Employee Authentication

⚠️ Important:
If you pay cash, use your student number as the reference.


Step 4: Upload Financial Documents and Apply for Bursaries

This step is only for students with bursaries or loans.

Upload Documents

  • Go to My Documents

  • Select Document Centre

  • Upload bursary or loan letters

NWU Bursaries and Allowances

Go to My Bursaries on the Student Portal.

Bursaries You Must Apply For

  • Leadership (Head Boy/Girl – first years only)

  • Arts and Culture (first years only)

  • Family Discount

  • Orphan

  • Foster Care

  • Disability

Automatically Applied Bursaries

  • Academic merit

  • Honours

  • Master’s

  • Doctoral

Acknowledgement of Debt (AOD)

  • For returning NSFAS students only

  • Available under My Bursaries → AOD

Travel Allowance (TRA)

  • Access via the TRA button

  • Follow the system instructions to submit details


Step 5: Prepare Your Class Timetable

Before registering, prepare your timetable carefully.

This helps you:

  • Avoid class clashes

  • Join the correct class groups

  • Receive the right academic information

Build Your Timetable

  1. Check your final offer letter for your programme name

  2. Find your Faculty Yearbook if unsure

  3. Download the Excel timetable file for your faculty

  4. Select:

    • Year 1

    • Your campus

    • Your programme version

  5. Write down all required course codes

Understanding Course Codes

Example: ECON112_PME_001

  • ECON112 – Course name and level

  • PME / PMA – Language (English or Afrikaans)

  • SME / SMA – Only English or Afrikaans

  • TRN – Translation available (Potchefstroom only)

  • SSM – Only one group available

  • 001 – Group number

⚠️ Always choose the group listed in the Excel file.


Step 6: Complete Your Registration

Before starting:

  • Close all extra tabs

  • Clear browser history if sharing a device

  • Watch the NWU registration guide video

How to Access Registration

Option 1: Direct registration link (only works after fee payment)
Option 2: Student Portal → Registration

Important: Disable Pop-Up Blockers

Allow pop-ups for the registration website in your browser settings.


Course Selection Rules

During registration, you may see warnings:

  • Minimum Credit Conflict: Too few courses selected

  • Schedule Conflict: Class times overlap

  • Prerequisite Conflict: Required course not selected

Fix the issue before submitting.


Step 7: Download Proof of Registration

After registration:

  • Click Generate

  • Download and save your proof of registration


Step 8: Use the Student Portal

The Student Portal helps you:

  • View fees and documents

  • Access class materials

  • Check calendars and results

  • Contact the Student Helpdesk


Final Reminder

NWU 2026 registration is the last step after accepting your offer.
